Blue Gum Squash Club approached me to help them redesign their website as well as create brand guidelines, social media tiles, physical posters, and banners for their squash club.
Blue Gum Squash Club has recently received government funding for their FutureSquash Program, which is aimed at boosting the participation of women and girls in squash. This, combined with a recent increase in younger generations taking an interest in squash, warranted an update to their website and online presence.
The aim of this project was to make the website more accessible to a wider consumer base, as well as allowing for the mostly volunteer-run club to keep the website running and social media presence heard even after the project was complete.
The first task was to create the brand guidelines, which would dictate the look and feel of the website design and social media design. Accessibility was the main goal for these guidelines, as most of the users had little design experience. The guidelines had to be clear and succinct but also detailed enough to be understood by anyone.
As their logo was not being redesigned, I had to work with the logo’s elements and colour schemes in mind. I chose a primary palette of blue and off white with a selection of secondary colours and tints. Using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 I made sure the primary colours were triple A compliant and also gave examples of what is not compliant.
For the primary typeface, I chose the sans serif font ‘Plus Jakarta Sans’. This typeface is fun and fresh, but also accessible for vision impaired readers and free using Google fonts.
After some revisions, we moved onto the website design. I worked with the client to create the copy for the website and built out several pages based off briefs they had provided off what they want each page to achieve.
I created elements such as squash balls and blue gum seed pods that are scattered across the site to reinforce the brand image. Sticking to the simple colour scheme and soft shapes gave the website a fun and accessible feeling.
For the social media elements, I created a series of editable templates using Canva. This allowed the club committee to create social media posts well after this project was complete.
For the posters I created a batch of posters in indiesgn and then brought them over to Cnava to create temapltes, once again to allow non-designers to create graphics that stuc to the brand guidelines after this project completion.
Feedback from the clubs committee was overwhelmingly positive, as when I was initially brought on board, there was a small amount of push back as to why the redesign was needed.
